eBay trader jailed for selling fakes

Milton Keynes CouncilA Milton Keynes eBay user has been imprisoned after admitting to selling fake Emporio Armani watches.

Raimondas Norkus, 28, who operated from his home in Conniburrow, originally appeared at Aylesbury Magistrates Court on Monday, June 11 and pleaded guilty to four offences under The Trade Marks Act 1994.

The court heard that in May 2011, following information received from a member of the public, Milton Keynes Council Trading Standards officers carried out an undercover test purchase on eBay, which resulted in a suspected fake Emporio Armani watch being bought, which was subsequently confirmed by experts as being counterfeit.

As a result a warrant was executed at Norkus' home address of the time, in Carlina Place, Conniburrow, in August 2011 which led to a seizure of 58 Emporio Armani branded watches and a large quantity of branded packaging – all of which were also found to be counterfeit.

Norkus was selling the watches for £120, while genuine watches retail up to £399.

Today (Monday) he was sentenced to 12 months immediate custody.

Milton Keynes Council head of regulatory unit Karen Ford said: “eBay is a popular way for traders and members of the public to sell goods, however Milton Keynes Trading Standards officers monitor the site for suspicious activity as well as investigating intelligence received from members of the public.

“Should anyone be found selling counterfeit goods they will be investigated and run the risk of further action against them, which may result in heavy fines and even custodial sentences, as well as Proceeds of Crime Act investigations in every case. Financial investigations go back six years and defendants may lose any of their assets - including their home, car or cash - acquired as the result of criminal activity.”
