Rookies vs. Sophomores (NBA)

Pick: Point Spread: 5.5 Rookies

We have used easy winners with the Sophomore squad in each of the past two years as they continue to dominate this game with six straight wins which include a 136-109 victory last year and a 155-114 win in 2007. The reason for this dominance was because the second-year players normally have a tremendous advantage over the first-year players as the veterans are used to the pressure and spotlight of the All-Star weekend. Another major advantage is that many of the second-year Sophomores played in this game the previous season and are therefore familiar with one another. The Sophomores also had a pair of guard/forward combinations that are teammates as Brandon Roy/LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland) and Ronnie Brewer/Paul Millsap (Utah) were playing together last season and this provided extra familiarity and teamwork. The situation this year is completely different and for the first time I recommend the Rookie squad. The advantages mentioned above are not present tonight for the Sophomore squad as only four players participated in this game last year, so there is inexperience on both rosters. The rookies actually have the more talented lineup this season and the better backcourt combination with sensational rookie guards Derrick Rose (Bulls) and O.J. Mayo (Grizzlies) holding an edge versus the sophomores guard combo of Aaron Brooks (Rockets) and Rodney Stuckey (Pistons). The rookies also hold the edge down low with three big men that aren’t really rookies as Greg Oden (Blazers), Rudy Fernandez (Blazers), and Marc Gasol (Grizzlies) all have big game experience. Oden played in the NCAA championship game and is really a sophomore after missing last year due to injury, while Fernandez and Gasol also have more experience than most first-year players and both played together on Spain’s gold medal Olympic team this past summer. The Rookie squad also has three players that are 7’0” or taller (Oden, Lopez, Gasol), so the Sophomore’s smaller frontcourt might have trouble scoring down low. Historically, the Sophomores have dominated this game, but past results do not apply tonight as the Rookie squad actually rates as the better overall team this year and they present solid value at an underdog price. You might also consider putting part of your play on the money-line (+180) as the Rookies have a solid chance at the outright win.

 

Play ROOKIES (+) as a 1 unit play.

 

I would also rate the Under 249½ as an additional light opinion. Last year’s game totaled only 245 points, but the game before that did total 269 points. That was actually the only time in the history of this contest that more than 245 points was scored and overall the past six games have totaled just 245, 269, 202, 239, 260, 244. This is an average score of just 243 points per game with a median score of only 244½. The Rookie squad has three players that are 7’0” or taller (Oden, Lopez, Gasol), so the Sophomore’s smaller frontcourt might have trouble scoring down low. This year’s Rookie squad is also more talented than past editions which should lead to a more competitive game. One of the reasons some of the past games have been higher scoring is because they blowouts and less competitive.
